Why Joseline, Frank Eudy and Howie Mandel Are TV’s Social Media MVPs of the Week
A “Big Brother” veteran, an “America’s Got Talent” judge and a “Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta” star got viewers talking passionately on social media over the past week.
The Wrap has partnered with Canvs, a language analytics company that measures emotions around content, for a weekly look at the characters and stars that have TV viewers the most worked up. The data below covers July 25-31 and is drawn from the most emotionally reacted-to broadcast and cable television shows (for the purposes of this roundup, we excluded the Democratic National Convention telecasts, as we did with the RNC the previous week).
The Emotional Reactions (ERs) prompted by last Wednesday’s episode of “America’s Got Talent” are way down from the previous Wednesday’s episode, which blew up for one reason: the presence of guest judge Louis Tomlinson of One Direction fame. Minus a boy-band superstar, which judge drives the show’s social media conversation? Not who you might guess (if you were going to guess Simon Cowell). Of the 9,913 specific Emotional Reactions (ERs) prompted by the July 27 episode, 1,068 (11 percent) were prompted by Howie Mandel, who, as we’ve noted before, seems to know exactly how to work the “AGT” auditorium and social media audience. (As for Cowell, he prompted 3 percent of the episode’s ERs.)
Of the 21,114 ERs prompted by the July 28 episode of “Big Brother,” 3,698 (19 percent) were prompted by contestant Frank Eudy, who, let’s just say, inspires a lot of mixed feelings among viewers. Of the ERs he prompted, 22 percent fell into the “love” bucket, 19 percent “hate” and 7 percent “crazy” — not a bad mix for a reality TV contestant. Still, the “BB” returnee (he also appeared in Season 14) couldn’t escape eviction, which had loyal members of #TeamFrank bummed.
Of the 36,015 ERs prompted by the July 25 season finale of “Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta,” 6,517 (18 percent) were prompted by Joseline (Hernandez). Her ERs fell in the “hate” category an unusually high 48 percent of the time, followed by “love” at 16 percent and “crazy” at 15 percent. Drama! Drama involving a thrown drink!
