Nigeria’s minister of Works, Power and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, has been ‘schooled’ by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara.

According to Daily Trust, the ex-governor of Lagos state state on Monday, June 20, that constituency projects were unconstitutional, but Dogara has stated otherwise.

Fashola had made his assertion at the one-day national summit on Political Representation and Constituency Relations and Intervention Services, but Dogara, who was attending same event, countered the ex-governor.

“In trying to find a legal framework for constituency projects, we must first look at those things that the National Assembly has powers to legislate upon. So we must avoid rowdiness and must be mindful of misplacing the jurisdictions with respect to other tiers of government,” Fashola was quoted to have said.

Dogara, however, noted that the concept of constituency projects was derived from the constitution.

According to him, the idea was borrowed from developed democracies around the world as a way of enhance equal distribution of projects in the various constituencies of the country.

Fashola has been in the news recently as he informed Nigerians of President Muhammadu Buhari’s desire to complete the second Niger Bridge as well as other projects embarked on by the federal government.

Speaking in Onitsha, Anambra state, during an inspection, the minister also described the project as one of the largest infrastructural work being embarked upon by the federal government said the bridge would bring an improvement and accelerate the economic prosperity, transportation and exchange of goods and services across the country when completed.
