New ‘Star Trek: Beyond’ Trailer Blows Up The Enterprise (Video)
Trekkies can now get another taste of what director Justin Lin has in store for them this summer with a new trailer for “Star Trek: Beyond.” While the teaser trailer released in December emphasized humor amidst a soundtrack courtesy of the Beastie Boys, this trailer shows just what kind of danger the Enterprise crew will face in the thirteenth “Trek” film.
The trailer opens with Captain Kirk (Chris Pine), reflecting on his reasons for joining Starfleet and his relationship with his father. The Enterprise is halfway through its five-year mission to seek out new life and new civilizations…but it won’t finish the journey. The Enterprise is destroyed by a hostile alien race, forcing our heroes to crash land in escape pods on an unknown planet with no way to contact Starfleet for assistance. What’s worse, they face a new enemy named Krall (Idris Elba) who has nothing but hatred for the Federation and their philosophy.

The trailer was released at a “Star Trek” fan event at the Paramount Pictures studios celebrating both the upcoming film and the franchise’s 50th anniversary. An interview with J.J. Abrams and stars from the film took place on the same soundstage where the original TV series was filmed in 1966.
The event also featured a special unveiling of a new street named after the late Leonard Nimoy, who helped launch “Star Trek” into an international phenomenon with his iconic performance as Spock. Zachary Quinto was on hand to reveal the sign reading “Leonard Nimoy Way” alongside Nimoy’s widow, children, and grandchildren.
“Star Trek: Beyond” also stars John Cho, Simon Pegg, Zoë Saldana, Karl Urban and Anton Yelchin, with the screenplay written by Pegg and Doug Jung. J.J. Abrams is producing the film through Bad Robot, with Jeffrey Chernov, David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Tommy Harper as executive producers.
“Star Trek: Beyond” will premiere on July 20 at San Diego Comic-Con and be released in theaters nationwide on July 22.
