Giants win streak ends under a hail of Cubs runs against Peavy
Jake Arrieta’s historic streak of not allowing more than three runs a start + Jake Peavy surrendering five in the second inning = start a new streak tomorrow, right, boys?
While Peavy failed to survive the second inning at AT&T Park in Friday night’s 8-1 loss to the world-beating Cubs, Arrieta continued a run of pitching that has to make even Clayton Kershaw say “wow.”
The streak nearly ended with a Buster Posey drive to left that looked like a possible three-run homer off the bat, which would have trimmed Chicago’s lead to 5-4 in the third inning, but it stayed in the park.
The Giants scored their run that inning when Joe Panik singled home Angel Pagan, who had stolen second base.
The win might prove costly to the Cubs, who lost right fielder Jason Heyward to an abdominal/torso injury after he crashed into the wall as he robbed Denard Span in Triples Alley in the first inning.
The relievers held Chicago scoreless until Ben Zobrist reached McCovey Cove in the eighth, off George Kontos in his return from the disabled list.
Things could have been worse for Peavy had Arrieta and teammate Dexter Fowler not convened at third base on an RBI single off the right-field wall by Tommy La Stella, with Arrieta tagged out.
La Stella came off the bench to play right field after Heyward made one of the best defensive plays of the year only to get hurt.
Span started the first inning with a 420-foot drive to the point in right-center that Heyward ran down.
