Ghost workers: 2 permanent secretaries, 6 directors suspended in Bauchi

The Bauchi state government has uncovered the ghost workers scam involving 22 senior staff of the state and local government service, NAN reports.

The news were made public by  Malam Abubakar Al-Sadique, press secretary to Governor Mohammed Abubakar, on Tuesday, May 17.

According to a press release, 22 officials were suspended — 2 permanent secretaries, 6 directors and pension desk officers in the local government areas of the state.

The statement reads in part: “His Excellency has approved the immediate suspension of officers found wanting in the course of the verification in the state and other related issues.

Pursuant to this, the Civil Service Commission and the Local Government Service Commission are to formalize the decisions where applicable. A committee to investigate the degree of culpability of all those found wanting, is to be set up.”

A complaints committee is to be established in the office of the head of service to receive complaints from verified workers experiencing difficulties with unpaid salaries.

Meanwhile, there were reports about 26,000 ghost workers out of a total staff strength of 105,000 in Bauchi state, 79,000 of whom have been verified as the authentic number of staff in the state government’s payroll.
