Troy softball rallies past Columbia
Two straight losses, a nasty injury in practice Tuesday to standout senior second baseman Kaitlin Delsignore and an early three-run deficit on the road Wednesday combined to leave the Troy softball team reeling.
Wierzbicki's two-run single in the fourth got Troy going and Levesque, a junior and five-year varsity star, smacked a go-ahead RBI triple in the seventh and scored on a throwing error from that play to propel Troy to a dramatic 5-3 victory over Columbia in Suburban Council play.
Troy (2-2, 2-2 league), playing in the Suburban Council for the first time, lost 8-0 Friday against Ballston Spa and dropped a 4-2 decision Monday against Averill Park in a rematch of the 2015 Section II Class A final won by the Warriors.
Troy only managed three hits against Columbia sophomore ace Maddie Burns, but all three hits drove in runs following walks or hit batters.
Consecutive wild pitches by French, a sophomore, allowed Schuyler Leahey to score the second run and an RBI single by Kelsey O'Brien made it 3-0.
Wierzbicki dropped a two-run single into center field.
After a walk to Levesque, eighth-grade catcher Madison Rifenberick deposited an RBI single into center to tie it at 3.
Levesque allowed a one-out hit by Danielle DiNova, but bounced back to strike out Sammy Hart and Jennah Hogan to end the game.
