The chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Sports Goni Lawan said today February 26, that delays in payment of allowances are usually occasioned by bureaucracies in the system.
The lawmaker said his investigation revealed that the Head Coach of the Super Eagles resigned due to non-payment of his allowance by the government and blamed the delay on bureaucracy in the system.
“You know the bureaucracy; that is the main issue in the area of sporting: You can’t delay the payment of your players. Sometimes they will play tomorrow and you must pay their money.
“That is the reason why the players are always complaining,” Lawan said.
Lawan also berated the move by the federal government to scrap the National Sports Commission, saying that it would further complicate the delays in the system.
While querying the move to scrap the commission, Lawan said that all developing countries around the world have both Sports Ministry and a Sports Commission.
“I see no reason here in Nigeria why the federal government would want to scrap the National Sports Commission.

“This is not good for us, even in the 36 states they have their Ministry of Sports’ commissioners and the chairman, Sports Commission of the states, in order to pay their allowances in time.
“Because if you say ministry, yes we like it, to follow the bureaucracy, but in the other way you cannot do that because we need to pay our players in time,” he said.
It would be recalled that before the emergence of Ministers, President Buhari was said to prefer the Director General of National Sports Commission (NSC) to relate directly with the presidency.
