President Muhammadu Buhari swept into office as the first opposition president to win election since the return to democracy promising to fight corruption. Since his assumption into office, the president has made the fight against corruption the policy focus of administration.

In the last few months, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has been making a series of arrest of politicians alleged to be linked with corrupt practices.

The arrest of the Sambo Dasuki, Nigeria’s National Security adviser opened a can of worms in what has become the most brazen allegation of corruption involving the top members of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party during the administration of the former president Goodluck Jonathan.

In the early part of the Buhari administration, the president had repeatedly told Nigerians that the monumental corruption committed during the Jonathan era cannot be ignored.

Before long, the NSA chief was arrested and detained in what was a long standoff. The arrest of Dasuki later led to revelations of massive corruption during Jonathan when it was reported that $2.1billion dollars security fund meant to prosecute the war against Boko Haram and about $322 million dollars Abacha loot had been looted.

At the last count, several highly placed Nigerians connected with President Jonathan and the then ruling PDP have been arrested for corruptly enriching themselves from what has infamously been named #Dasukigate. Dasuki had confessed that he had been instructed by Jonathan to disburse the huge funds to some individuals.

Many believed that the money was expended corruptly to ensure the former president returned to power. The EFCC is still making arrest arising from scandal.

But an interesting twist to the tale is the allegation by the Peoples Democratic Party that All Progressives Congress is using the EFCC to harass and persecute its members in the guise of fighting corruption.

The have alleged that the EFCC has been arresting PDP members claiming those who have been alleged to be corrupt in APC are being left off the hook.

While Buhari has denied any witch hunting in the fight against corruption, he has also affirmed that he will not spare any member of his party who is found wanting.

The EFCC has also come out to deny the allegation that it is being used by the Buhari government to harass the opposition. In spite of the criticism of his anti-corruption campaign, Buhari has remained undaunted. But the general consensus among Nigerians is that for the war against corruption to be total, there must not be sacred cow.
