Expert: Aliyev's visit to Tehran poses no strategic threats to Armenia-Iran relations
From geopolitical point of view, Armenia remains one of Iran's most important partners in the region, Sergey Minasyan, Deputy Head of the Caucasus Institute, told ArmInfo when commenting on the Azerbaijani president's visit to Tehran.
The expert is sure that the Azerbaijani-Iranian economic relations have received more opportunities and the sides will try to use them now. In particular, they plan a second railway line and some other projects.
At the same time, Minasyan points at serious ideological differences of Baku and Tehran that will hardly be overcome within the near future. In addition, Armenia was a kind of "breathing hole" for Iran while it was experiencing the West's sanctions. Armenia was a link between Iran and Russia. The expert believes that Armenia will help Georgia, Russia, and Iran establish an energy bridge.
"I suppose that Aliyev's visit to Tehran poses no strategic threats to the relations of Armenia and Iran. Both Yerevan and Tehran will continue using their cooperation capacities," Minasyan said.
On February 23, the presidents of Azerbaijan and Iran signed 11 agreements of cooperation, including framework agreements on energy supply, connection of the two countries' railways, construction of a railway bridge Azerbaijan-Iran and others.
