Cars damaged in school wall collapse should have valid insurance claim
Drivers whose cars were buried in bricks when a structure collapsed at a school on Thursday should be able to make a valid insurance claim so long as they have comprehensive coverage, according to the head of the Malta Insurance Association.
Adrian Galea, the association’s director general, yesterday told the Times of Malta that “contrary to popular belief” most property insurance policies did not exclude acts of God from coverage.
“In fact, many of the natural perils such as storms, wind, hail and earthquakes are part of the standard cover offered. The owners of those cars damaged in this incident should in fact be able to lodge a valid claim against their insurance policy so long as it is a comprehensive one,” he said.
Fortunately, no one was injured when the wall of a hall under construction at San Anton School collapsed on to the adjacent access road, even though senior students were on lunch break at the time.
Tons of concrete bricks filled the road, covering cars and classroom windows.
The collapse is believed to have been caused by strong winds on the day, however, the authorities are looking into the health and safety standards on the construction site.
