New York Fashion Week: Victoria Beckham unveils latest collection
Modesty is not a word that's often used to describe Victoria Beckham - a woman at the helm of one of the most photographed families in the world.
And yet when the former Spice Girl unveiled her latest collection at New York Fashion Week today, it was this notion of reservation - specifically, the quiet insistence that this was a wardrobe for a women who wanted to feel confident in her clothes - that provided the noise.
At a show attended by her husband David and eldest son Brooklyn - currently a Vogue cover star - Beckham unveiled a muted colour palette of ivory, navy and rich claret.
Relying on ankle-length hem heights and a loose silhouette, she fused metropolitan cuts with a sense of freedom. This was effortlessness elegance, done Beckham's way.
Sex, once a default aesthetic for the designer, was off the agenda. Instead, a relaxed approach to femininity prevailed with dip-back tabards in butter leather and ruched silk dresses among the strong holds.
Woven picnic blanket motifs lent colour to mid-length bias cut dresses while oversized Hawaiian bombers injected this show with youthful, decidedly cosmopolitan appeal.
Beckham, who has already achieved so much in her quest to prove her brand to be one that delivers on much more than a killer sheath dresses, will continue her crusade next summer with the addition of print.
Reinterpreting on 1960s surf motifs, the designer printed lapels of oversized coats with hits of tangerine and sapphire.
Perhaps keen to further harness her reputation as a designer capable of delivering clothes to the modern working women, Beckham chose to side step trophy pieces with this offering and instead focussed on empowering her heroine with a whole wardrobe of options which are designed for her to live comfortably in.
To this end, shoes were flat - flat snakeskin loafer mules and block wedge leather sandals - and fabrics, soft to the touch. Buff leather saddle bags in rust and tan also served as welcome new additions to the label's accessory offering.
Acutely aware of her high paying customers' affection for luxury, Beckham has also chosen to incorporate butter soft suede into next summer's collection.
