Mauricio Pochettino admits Tottenham and Emmanuel Adebayor 'needed to split'
Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino is pleased that Emmanuel Adebayor's situation has been resolved after the striker left Spurs by mutual consent on Sunday morning.
The 31-year-old came close to leaving White Hart Lane on loan during the summer but eventually decided to stay put, despite being told that he did not feature in the club's plans.
The Togo international was believed to be seeking a pay-off to terminate his contract and was not included in the north Londoners' Premier League squad prior to his departure.
However, Pochettino is adamant that he maintained a good relationship with the forward throughout the uncertainty surrounding his future but admitted that a split was best for both parties.
"It was clear from last season, four months ago, the situation was clear.
"I'm happy because for him, it is important that now he has sorted the problem and as a club, we wish all the best to him because our relationship for one year was very good. But on the professional side, we needed to split," the Argentine admitted.
Adebayor joined Spurs from Manchester City for £5m in 2012 after a successful loan spell at White Hart Lane but fell out favour last season as Harry Kane became Pochettino's primary striker.
The forward is now a free agent but is unable to join a new club until January as his departure from Spurs was agreed after the transfer window closed.
