WHO: more COVID-19 cases detected in a month than in the first six months of a pandemic
The number of coronavirus cases detected in the past month was higher than in the first six months of the pandemic, World Health Organization (WHO) Director General Tedros Ghebreyesus said.
“There have been more COVID-19 cases reported in four weeks than in the first six months of the pandemic. In Europe and North America, hospitals and intensive care units are filling or already full, ”said Mr Ghebreyesus at a briefing in Geneva.
He noted that in recent days there has been “good news about vaccine trials” against COVID-19. According to him, this gives hope for the end of the pandemic. At the same time, the head of WHO urged to continue to use the available tools to combat the virus in order to “interrupt the chains of transmission and save lives.”
In the world, the coronavirus was detected in more than 57 million people, more than 1.3 million have died, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. Russia ranks fifth in the ranking of countries in terms of the total number of cases of infection. The United States ranks first with 11.8 million cases, followed by India (9 million), Brazil (5.9 million) and France (2.1 million).
