De La Hoya talks Mayweather-McGregor, calls for Canelo rematch at 160
The Golden Boy promoter gives his thoughts on a possible Mayweather-McGregor fight and calls out Floyd for a Canelo rematch.
In this video interview with FightHype, Oscar De La Hoya gives his two cents on a potential Floyd Mayweather vs Conor McGregor fight while suggesting that Floyd should rematch Canelo Alvarez at 160lbs. Check out what he had to say...
On his thoughts about cross-code fights between boxing and MMA:
“Two different sports, two different sports...To me it’ll be a disrespect for boxing if you have a UFC fighter, who has zero experience in boxing, came and fought Floyd Mayweather. And if Floyd Mayweather went and fought McGregor in the octagon it would be a disrespect to the octagon...If both guys fought each other in the ring then Floyd would win easily. If they fought in the octagon, McGregor would win hands down. It’s no contest, I mean he would choke him out or do something, you know, which Floyd is not used to.
“It’s just two different sports. I mean I would never, ever, can see the UFC letting their biggest star fight inside the ring with Floyd because obviously he would get embarrassed. I mean Floyd would outbox him easily so, it just would never happen.”
On the notion that there’s too much money on the table for it not to happen:
“Well, I mean, there is a lot of money but there’s more money involved when you’re an entity like the UFC who was just bought for $4.6 billion dollars, and risking you’re biggest star to a boxer like Floyd and being ridiculed inside the ring is not worth it so...There’s more money at stake letting them risk their biggest star fight against Floyd - it would be disastrous for the UFC so I don’t see it happening.”
On if he thinks Mayweather should come out of retirement:
“Sure, why not. Of course, yeah. And face Canelo at 160.”
