Jamaica’s Thompson wins 100-meter gold
The 100-meter Olympic gold medal is heading back to Jamaica, only this time in the hands of Elaine Thompson, who took down America’s best as well as her training partner, two-time defending champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce.
“By far, I would say this is my best championship ever,” said Fraser-Pryce, who has battled a toe injury.
Jeff Henderson of the United States overtook South Africa’s Luvo Manyonga on his last attempt to win the long jump gold medal.
Nafissatou Thiam of Belgium held off defending champion Jessica Ennis-Hill of Britain to win the heptathlon, which went down to fractions of a second in the last event.
Defending champion Kirani James of Grenada posted the top qualifying time for the men’s 400, winning his semifinal heat in 44.02 seconds.
