Gold medal gymnast Simone Biles get brief rest, then back to work
Granted a day off from practice after winning the gold medal in the women’s gymnastics all-around Thursday afternoon, Biles, 19, planned to spend the day visiting with her parents, Ron and Nellie Biles, sister Adria and other family members.
[...] it will be back to work Saturday, practicing for three days of event finals — vault on Sunday, beam on Monday and floor exercise on Tuesday — that will wrap up her Brazilian fortnight.
“Once we got back to the apartment (at the Olympic Village), my teammates all ran and screamed and jumped on me and Aly and attacked us,” she said.
Amid the flurry, she learned that fellow Houston native Simone Manuel also won a gold medal Thursday night, in the women’s 100-meter freestyle.
Kellogg’s unveiled two commemorative cereal boxes, with one featuring Biles and the other featuring the five-member team.
The big sponsorship is still out there — Biles has a hankering for a deal with Mercedes-Benz, mostly because she wants a new car to match her mother’s — and so are other offers to come, including appearances on awards shows and the upcoming USA Gymnastics victory tour.
With her two biggest competitions behind her, Biles is close enough to the end of her Olympics that she can look forward to certain indulgences that she has avoided during the weeks leading up to Rio — as in a pizza party with her teammates and friends, including, she said, “cinnamon rolls and desserts and stuff.”
