George taxi hearings postponed
The hearings probing a possible cancellation of operating licences of the Uncedo George Taxi Association have been postponed.
|||Cape Town - The hearings investigating a possible cancellation of operating licences belonging to members of the Uncedo George Taxi Association have been postponed until the first week of February 2016, Western Cape’s Department of Transport and Public Works said on Thursday.
“The hearing has been called in terms of section 79(2)(b) of the National Land Transport Act, 2009, after members of the association or their employees were implicated in violent protest action in George on 19 August this year,” said the department’s spokesperson Byron la Hoe.
“During the protest, roads were barricaded, buses set alight, and CCTV cameras and police vehicles damaged.”
Hearings into the matter took place in Oudtshoorn in late October and saw certain members summoned to answer charges regarding the violation of their licence conditions.
However, the legal representative for affected members asked for a postponement to provide them with time to sort out finances for legal representation as well as prepare heads of argument.
Thus, the Provincial Regulatory Entity, who were conducting the hearings, advised the parties that hearings would take place in the first week of February 2016 at the Eden Sports Academy in Oudtshoorn.
