Honolulu store owners say thieves are targeting cans of Spam

HONOLULU (AP) — Authorities say they're seeing a trend of people stealing cans of Spam from Honolulu stores to sell on the streets for quick cash.

Hawaii News Now reports that Institute for Human Services spokesman Kimo Carvalho says Spam is easy to sell, and "it's quick cash for quick drug money."

Ra Long, who owns a convenience store in Honolulu, says shoplifters in the past have typically targeted alcohol, but recently more cans of Spam have gone missing. Honolulu police took a report earlier this month of man stealing case of Spam from a store.

Carvalho says people aren't only selling Spam, but often clothing and toiletries are peddled.
