Confusion as alleged kidnap kingpin Evans publicly disowns lawyer who is fighting to secure his release

- The suspect says even if he is released by the police, he would not go for fear of being harmed by those he had kidnapped

Suspected kidnap kingpin, Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike, popularly known as Evans has denied hiring any lawyer to sue the police on his behalf.

The media had reported that Evans had dragged the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris and three others before the Federal High Court in Lagos over alleged illegal detention.

NAIJ.com learnt that joined as respondents in the motion he reportedly filed by his lawyers are the Nigeria Police Force, Commissioner of Police, Lagos state and the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, Lagos State Police Command.

In the fundamental rights enforcement suit filed on his behalf by a Lagos-based lawyer, Olukoya Ogungbeje, the suspected kidnapper prayed for the order of court to direct the respondents to immediately charge him to court if there is any case against him in accordance with Sections 35 (1) (c) (3) (4) (5) (a) (b) and 36 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

He had subsequently filed another suit against the inspector general of police and three other parties, claiming N300 million as general and exemplary damages against the police for “illegal detention and unconstitutional media trial.

However, when asked about the lawsuits, the suspect denied engaging the services of any lawyer to file a motion for him.

He told Channels TV on Sunday, July 2 that the lawsuits were an attempt by some people to put him in more trouble.

“I have no hand in any case filed against the police and I did not speak with any lawyer or my father to fill a case on my behalf.

All I will say is that they should temper justice with mercy,” he said.

The suspect said even if he was released by the police, he would not go for fear of being harmed by those he had kidnapped and collected millions of naira as ransom from.

Meanwhile, the lawyer representing Evans has lost a court case and has been fined N500,000 for lack of evidence.

The attorney, Olukoya Ogungbeje, lost a case on Friday, June 30 when the two fundamental rights applications he filed got dismissed by Justice Ibrahim Buba of the Federal High Court. Ogungbeje was representing his clients Messrs Chief Kenneth Chukwuemeka Ajoku and Chidinma Ozorumba against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commisson (EFCC).

The case was dismissed by the presiding judge for being frivolous and insubstantial.
