Kazakh photographer shows the blooming of “mysterious” tulips
The photographer shared the images on his Instagram.
“The Regel's tulip is a true ‘living chronicle’ of our nature and one of the most unusual endemic plants of Kazakhstan. It is found exclusively in the Chu-Ili Mountains and is considered one of the oldest representatives of its genus,” the post says.
According to the photographer, the rare plant hides among rocks on scree slopes, and the flower’s appearance holds a mystery.
“The tulip’s main secret lies in its unusual morphology, which sets it apart from hundreds of other species. These are unique corrugated leaves with numerous folds and grooves, and this is not merely a whim of evolution, but a complex survival mechanism in harsh conditions. Such a surface allows the plant to collect and retain scarce moisture as efficiently as possible on arid rocky slopes,” he noted.

The photographer reminded readers that the rare Regel tulips are listed in the Red Book and are among the first to bloom.
“Remember that the Regel tulip is listed in the Red Book and must not be picked — collect only photo bouquets. Such images are not only aesthetically pleasing, but also an important way to remind people how unique and at the same time fragile the flora of our region is,” the photographer warned.
This refers to the tulip’s characteristic corrugated leaves with many folds and grooves.
Scientists note that this shape is not just a visual feature, but an important survival mechanism in the harsh conditions of rocky slopes. These longitudinal ridges help the plant retain moisture.
Regel's tulips are among the first to bloom — usually in late March and early April.
This species is characterized by early flowering, and its blooming period is usually short.
Where else they can be found
Earlier, Almaty photographer Eric Turkebayev, while speaking about the Kurtinskoye Reservoir, mentioned that he had also seen these same Regel's tulips there.
“To be honest, I do not know much about these tulips, but they are very beautiful, and quite a lot of them bloom there. The flowering has not started yet. I think it will begin around mid-April. In about two or three weeks,” he said.
Interest in the Kurtinskoye Reservoir continues to grow. It should be recalled that in early March the location became popular on social media.
Botanists describe the Regel's tulip as one of the most unusual species of wild tulips in the world.
It is easy to recognize by its pale flower and ribbed, folded leaves.
