IOC set to decide on flooded Lima for 2024 vote

The IOC look set to decide Friday whether to keep stricken Peruvian capital Lima as the location for a meeting to choose the 2024 Olympic Games hosts, sources confirmed to AFP.

Flash floods and landslides hit parts of Lima last month and with the difficulties faced by Peruvian authorities the International Olympic Committee meeting "seems very threatened," an IOC source said.

A meeting of IOC chiefs is scheduled to take place at the organisation's Lausanne headquarters on Friday morning and "a decision could be taken then".

The IOC will take into account the report of Spanish Olympic Committee president Alejandro Blanco who carried out an evaluation with local authorities in Peru.

But several other IOC sources believe that the 130th IOC session in Lima may not go ahead because of problems between Peru's national Olympic committee and the government as well as organisational hold-ups and the fallout from the recent floods.

Peru's Olympic committee chief Jose Quinones was banned from holding any public post for five years in 2016 because of irregularities in accounts he controlled.

If the IOC cannot hold its congress in Lima it may decide to hold it in Lausanne. But as Switzerland is a neighbour of France this could set off a dispute over the impartiality of the vote for 2024.

Paris and Los Angeles are vying for the right to host the 2024 Games.

Doha and Abu Dhabi could be possible alternatives for the IOC meeting.

Paris and Los Angeles delegations met with Olympic chiefs and sports delegations in Aarhus this week as the IOC explores the option of giving them both an edition.

The idea of awarding two Games at once has gained currency after the price tag of hosting the Olympics scared off rival bidders for 2024, leaving the IOC wondering who will step forward for 2028.
