There are more elderly people in Kazakhstan - where they live and what they do
Tengrinews.kz — The number of people over 60 is growing in Kazakhstan. Approximately one thousand Kazakhstanis have already celebrated their 100th birthday; Tengrinews provides the details.
According to the Bureau of National Statistics, at the beginning of 2026, Kazakhstan had 2,923,472 people aged 60 and older. This accounts for 14.2 percent of the country's population.
These include:
1,163,270 men;1,760,202 women.
The regions with the highest number of residents over 60 are:
Almaty — 328,385 people;
Turkistan region — 216,544;
Karaganda region — 212,487;
Almaty region — 203,499;
Astana — 171,138.
The majority of Kazakhstanis over 60 reside in urban areas — 1,894,268 people. Meanwhile, 1,029,204 people live in rural areas.
It is worth noting that the number of residents over 60 is on the rise in Kazakhstan. For instance, according to previously released data from the Bureau, at the beginning of 2023, there were 2,616,515 people in this age group, representing 13.2 percent of the population.
More than a thousand people over the age of 100
According to the Bureau of National Statistics, there are 1,323 people aged 100 and older in Kazakhstan.
At the same time, a significant portion of the pre-retirement and retirement-age population continues to work. In the second quarter of 2026, the number of employed Kazakhstanis aged 60 and older reached 465,302 people.
As a reminder, International Day for Older Persons is celebrated annually on October 1 worldwide, including in Kazakhstan.
It was previously reported that retirees in Astana will receive a one-time social benefit payment for the Day of Older Persons. According to the regulations, the payment amount will be 2.5 monthly calculation indices (MCI). In 2024, this amounts to 10,812.5 tenge.
