Tokayev to deliver an address to the people of Kazakhstan
Tengrinews.kz — Head of State Kassym-Jomart Tokayev will address the people of Kazakhstan today ahead of the Kurultai elections, according to Presidential Spokesperson Aybek Smadiyarov.
The President's address will be broadcast on national television channels at 7:00 PM.
As a reminder, Kazakhstan will elect a new Parliament—the unicameral Kurultai—on August 23. These are the first parliamentary elections following the constitutional reform: the Senate and Majilis have been abolished, and the bicameral Parliament will be replaced by the unicameral Kurultai, which will consist of 145 deputies.
Seven parties are vying for seats in the new legislative body. The "Adilet" party has nominated the most candidates at 186. They are followed by "Auyl" with 69, Respublica with 76, the People's Party of Kazakhstan with 72, "Ak Zhol" with 63, "Baytak" with 47, and the JSDP with 33 candidates.
Following the elections, the previous parliamentary format will be permanently replaced by the new unicameral system.
