Man with burns on nearly 90 percent of body saved in Almaty
Tengrinews.kz — Doctors at City Clinical Hospital No. 4 in Almaty managed to save a 26-year-old patient who was admitted in extremely serious condition with burns covering 89 percent of his body. The patient spent four days in intensive care and underwent several operations.
Burns covering almost 90 percent of the body: what happened
According to the Ministry of Healthcare, the accident occurred in the courtyard of the man’s home. A gas cylinder exploded in a shed, causing the victim to suffer severe burns.
He was taken to the emergency department of City Clinical Hospital No. 4 in Almaty.
Doctors diagnosed the patient with barotrauma and thermal burns covering 89 percent of his body, 15 percent of which were deep burns.
The man also sustained a severe injury to his left arm, with extensive soft tissue damage.
Note: Barotrauma is damage to tissues and internal organs caused by a sudden change in pressure. When a gas cylinder explodes, a person can be injured by the blast wave, which may cause barotrauma.
Immediately after admission, doctors began intensive anti-shock therapy.
Skin grafting and four days in intensive care
On the day of hospitalization, doctors performed emergency surgery on the injured arm. Treatment then continued in the burns unit.
“The patient was admitted in extremely serious condition. He spent four days in intensive care, and after his condition stabilized, he was transferred to our burns unit. Burns of this extent are always one of the most serious challenges for doctors. Thanks to the coordinated work of the clinic’s entire multidisciplinary team, we managed to save the patient’s life,” said Yeldos Almenov, head of the burns unit at City Clinical Hospital No. 4.
During his hospital treatment, the patient underwent several operations, including skin grafting, or autodermoplasty, and reconstructive surgery on the injured limb.
The man, who was discharged a month after hospitalization, thanked the doctors and medical staff for their help and support during treatment:
“Thanks to the medical staff of the burns unit and intensive care, as well as the cardiologists, therapists and traumatologists, the treatment went very well. I received not only physical but also emotional support, because coping with such injuries is very difficult,” he shared.
The young man now faces a long rehabilitation period.
