New rules in Astana — scooters will not be able to ride as before
Tengrinews.kz – The movement of electric scooters on sidewalks will be restricted in Astana. In the near future, registration will be introduced for them and control over violations will be strengthened. This was announced by Deputy Head of the Administrative Police Department of the Astana Police, Makhambet Tuleshov.
According to Tuleshov, electric scooters are planned to be registered and assigned license plates. In addition, surveillance cameras will be able to record violations committed by their drivers.
“With these measures, we will make pedestrian movement on sidewalks safer,” Tuleshov said during a briefing.
The issue of a complete ban on scooter movement on sidewalks is still under discussion.
“It is important to understand that if electric scooters are banned from sidewalks, they will move onto the roadway. Accordingly, road safety risks will increase. A detailed analysis is currently underway, after which decisions will be made,” he explained.
Police also reminded that traffic rules apply to cyclists as well.
“All requirements apply to cyclists. In case of violations, administrative measures are applied. Personnel regularly carry out monitoring,” Tuleshov added.
Responding to a question about how owners of private scooters will reach bike lanes, the police officer clarified that the changes will apply only to rental services.
“From July 1, the changes will apply only to operators who rent out electric scooters. The ban on sidewalk movement is under consideration and has not yet been adopted. Movement will continue as before, but control over usage will be strengthened,” said the deputy head of the department.
