Severe weather in Almaty: important warning from the Emergency Situations Department
Tengrinews.kz – The Almaty Department for Emergency Situations (DES) has issued an important warning to city residents.
On 5 March, a sharp deterioration in weather conditions is expected in Almaty.
“In the mountainous areas of the Medeu and Bostandyk districts on 5 March, heavy snowfall and strong winds are expected. The south-easterly wind may reach 18–23 metres per second, at times during the day up to 28 metres per second,” the statement says.
The Almaty DES urges drivers and pedestrians to be especially careful and to observe safety measures in icy conditions. Residents are also asked to postpone trips to the mountains.
During strong winds, residents are advised not to leave their cars under trees. In addition, during squally winds it is recommended to:
limit going outside (if possible, stay indoors);
if you are at home, tightly close windows and doors. Remove household items from the yard, open balconies and loggias that could cause damage to your home;
if you are outside, try to take shelter in the nearest entranceway or shop;
do not take cover under billboards, trees, in unfinished buildings, or close to building walls, as roofing materials may fall from roofs;
it is extremely dangerous during strong winds to stand under power lines or approach fallen power cables.
