Revealed: Who could Arsenal play in Champions League round of 16?
Arsenal finished the league phase of the Champions League with a 100 percent record after a 3-2 win over Kairat Almaty at the Emirates Stadium.
The Gunners have already booked their spot in the round of 16 stage of the elite European competition, and they could now face one of four teams.
Mikel Arteta’s side played out a hard-fought goalless draw against Atalanta (away) in the league phase last season after David Raya’s stunning penalty save.
The Bergamo outfit are one of the clubs that Arsenal could face in the double-legged round of 16 tie.
Alongside them, Bayer Leverkusen, Borussia Dortmund and Olympiacos are other possible opponents.
Arsenal have not played Leverkusen in a competitive fixture since the 2002/03 Champions League season.
They shared the spoils on the road (1-1) before picking up a convincing 4-1 victory at Highbury.
Meanwhile, the Gunners have had a mixed record against Dortmund in the Champions League, picking up four wins, one draw and suffering three losses.
It has been a similar case with Olympiacos in Europe.
Arsenal have won seven and lost six against the Greek side. Olympiacos ousted them from the Europa League at the last 32 stage on away goals during the 2019/20 season.
Hence, the Gunners cannot take any of those teams lightly.
The knockout phase play-off draw will be conducted tomorrow morning. Atalanta and Leverkusen are seeded and will take on either Dortmund or Olympiacos.
Arsenal’s immediate focus will shift to the Premier League. The London giants travel to Elland Road for Saturday’s clash against Leeds United, which appears to be a must-win.
After three winless league matches, the Gunners must respond with a victory to temporarily send them seven points above Manchester City and Aston Villa at the top of the table.
Man City and Villa won’t be in league action until Sunday.
