Epitaphs to converge at Eleftheria Square bridge on Good Friday
A deeply reverent Good Friday Greek Orthodox Easter tradition will once again bring together hundreds of people in the heart of Nicosia, as the customary meeting of the Epitaphs takes place at Eleftheria Square.
The event is scheduled to take place at 9.30pm, at the bridge of Eleftheria Square, following the procession of the Epitaphs through the streets within the walled city, according to an announcement by Nicosia Municipality.
Organised by Nicosia municipality in collaboration with the churches of Panayia Phaneromeni, Archangel Michael Trypiotis and Ayios Savvas, the event revives a long-standing Easter custom that symbolises unity in faith and tradition.
The processions will be led by clergy and church committees, accompanied by state, municipal and military officials. The ceremony will also be attended by Bishop Nikodimos of Nitrias, Exarch of the Patriarchate of Alexandria and All Africa in Cyprus, who will preside over the gathering.
Each Epitaph will be carried with ceremonial honour. The Epitaph of Panayia Phaneromeni will be borne by members of the Cyprus Reserve Commandos Association, accompanied by the Cyprus Police Philharmonic band and scouts from the 76th Strovolos Scouts.
The Epitaph of Archangel Michael Trypiotis will be carried by the 40th Engomi Scouts, with musical accompaniment from the 71st Kaimakli Scout band, while the Epitaph of Ayios Savvas will be accompanied by scouts from the 107th Lykavitos Scouts.
Throughout the event, hymns will be chanted by lead cantors and church choirs, enhancing the solemn and devotional atmosphere of the evening.
