2025 Horror Movie Joins Netflix Just Months After Box Office Flop
Justin Tipping's polarizing 2025 horror movie Him will arrive on Netflix later this month, less than a year after its disappointing run at the box office.
Him tells the story of Cam, a young, up-and-coming football player who is taken under the wing of a recently retired quarterback who promises to build him into the greatest player there's ever been. But when Cam begins his unique training, he soon learns that greatness comes at a price.
The film stars Tyriq Withers, Marlon Wayans, Julia Fox, Tim Heidecker, and Jim Jeffries, and was written and directed by Justin Tipping. The film was also produced by Monkeypaw Productions—the company founded by horror legend Jordan Peele in 2012.
Despite the undeniable level of talent both behind and in front of the camera, Him opened to mixed reviews from critics and a cold reception from general audiences. Most reviews cited weak, derivative writing and prioritization of style over substance as the film's biggest flaws.
The film was given 31% on Rotten Tomatoes, with the audience score sitting slightly higher at 56%. This was a huge disappointment for horror fans, many of whom had assumed that Tipping and Peele would deliver another classic of the genre.
Him pulled in $27.8 million at the worldwide box office, which barely covered its reported budget of $24 million (via Box Office Mojo). Given the added marketing and distribution costs, the film ended up being a net loss for Universal and Monkeypaw.
"What could have been a truly cutting takedown of the American football meat grinder just winds up playing to the very appetite for human carnage that fans can’t get enough of," The Guardian wrote in their review. "No matter your view of Him, as a slasher or a sports film, it’s a fumble."
Him joins Netflix in the United States on April 19, 2026. For those who can't wait to watch this polarizing horror flick, Him is currently available to stream on Peacock with a valid subscription. It will leave Peacock when it moves to Netflix.
