Increased police measures during Easter holidays
Police will implement increased road safety measures over the Easter holiday period, aiming to enhance traffic safety and prevent serious and fatal road collisions.
In a statement, police said that due to the expected rise in traffic between Holy Thursday and Easter Monday, there will be a strong presence on city roads, intercity routes and highways.
Measures will include increased patrols, traffic regulation and targeted road checks.
During these checks, police stressed that there will be “zero tolerance” for offences that are among the leading causes of serious and fatal collisions.
These include speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, failure by drivers and passengers to wear seatbelts, failure by motorcyclists to wear protective helmets, distracted driving due tp use of mobile phones and dangerous overtaking.
Police are urging drivers to exercise caution, comply with traffic laws and follow road signs and obey officers.
Simultaneously, police continued intensified patrols and checks across all districts on Tuesday and overnight, as part of ongoing efforts to prevent the use of firecrackers, the lighting of traditional Easter bonfires (lambradjies) and incidents of youth delinquency.
According to the police, patrol units responded to a number of incidents involving fires and the use of firecrackers, while in several areas officers located and removed wood that had been gathered for bonfires.
In several cases involving fires in open areas, members of the fire brigade were called in to extinguish the flames.
In both Nicosia and Limassol districts, police operations uncovered piles of wood and other materials intended for bonfires, including chairs, sofas and rubbish bins. The collected materials were removed with the assistance of local authorities
Police said operations will continue with an increased presence and targeted actions nationwide.
