Was Anne Heche involved in a love triangle when she was in a relationship with Ellen DeGeneres? Well, maybe.
If we dust off the old Hollywood gossip archives, we have to go back to 1998 when Heche was promoting the Psycho reboot with co-star Vince Vaughn. There were rumors that she had a fling with Vaughn on the set of another film, Return to Paradise, but she was also early in her romance with DeGeneres — that’s where things allegedly got tricky.
According to a former Entertainment Tonight producer, Fran Weinstein, via Page Six, Heche “lost her mind — eyes opened like a sinkhole” when she asked her about the Vaughn rumor. Even though the interview moved on, Heche decided that she didn’t want her reaction to see the light of day.
“I don’t want you to use that stuff about Vince Vaughn. I don’t want my girlfriend to hear about it,” Weinstein claimed Heche told her after the interview wrapped. The verbal altercation went on to involve publicists and managers who followed Weinstein to her St. Regis hotel room, demanding the tape.
Eventually, Heche stormed off the elevator and into Weinstein’s room. “She comes out yelling, ‘You have no respect for me. You have no respect for my girlfriend,‘” claimed the former producer. Heche eventually got her way, and DeGeneres never saw her girlfriend’s reported reaction to the Vaughn romance rumors.
Weinstein’s story will be chronicled in her April 28 memoir, Tortured Soles: High Heels, Low Expectations and The Hollywood Gossip Mill. But a 1998 article with The Morning Call recalled how hot the love triangle rumors were almost 30 years ago. Vaughn fervently denied the gossip.
“It’s funny that I’m being called the guy who’s breaking up Anne and Ellen,” he said. “But on the other hand, I have a girlfriend, and it hurts her feelings. My family was upset too. My mom calls me up and says, ‘Did you break up this nice couple, Vince? Why would you do that to somebody?’ I have to say, ‘Mom, it’s not true.’ But she believes what she reads in the paper.”
Heche dated DeGeneres from 1997 to 2000. Vaughn married Kyla Weber in 2010.
Heche passed away in 2022 and isn’t here to defend herself in Weinstein’s tale, but Hollywood and love triangles seem to go hand in hand.
