Texas Republicans retaliate against Dem lawmaker
Texas Republicans moved to strip newly elected Democratic state Senator Taylor Rehmet of legislative power by excluding him from committee assignments, according to Fort Worth Star-Telegram reporting.
Lieutenant Gov. Dan Patrick announced committee vacancies Monday without naming Rehmet, preventing him from participating in interim policy hearings lawmakers typically hold before the next legislative session.
Rehmet, a veteran and union organizer, accused GOP leaders of silencing his district and voters through partisan maneuvering. He won a stunning upset in a reliably Republican Fort Worth district by defeating far-right MAGA activist Leigh Wambsganss, capturing Latino voters by a decisive margin. His victory sparked GOP fears of broader losses in November that could undermine their gerrymandered congressional and legislative maps, drawn with assumptions about capturing significant Hispanic support.
Rehmet called for committee assignments on social media.
