This Common Pre-Workout Dosing Mistake Is Sabotaging Your Strength Gains, Exercise Physiologist Says
Pre-workout lovers understand just how different a workout feels without the help of their trusty vice. That extra pep in your step and focus can make a significantly noticeable difference in workout performance. But there’s a lesser-known phenomenon that can undermine its effectiveness: ingredient settling.
Because pre-workout formulas combine ingredients with very different physical properties—like caffeine, citrulline, beta-alanine, flavoring agents, and anti-caking compounds—the powder isn’t always perfectly uniform. Such components vary in particle size, density, and how they flow, so over time, factors like shipping and storage can cause them to separate. Heavier or finer particles may shift within the container, meaning what you scoop isn’t always what the label promises, dosage-wise.
Why Your Pre-Workout Settles
"In extreme cases, this can create concentration variability within the tub, meaning one scoop may not perfectly match another," says Jordan Glenn, PhD, Head of Science at SuppCo. "Importantly, this does not automatically mean the product was manufactured incorrectly. Even well-formulated powders can experience some settling over time. But it does mean that user behavior—how you store and scoop—can influence the consistency of what you’re actually ingesting."
So, why does it matter? When ingredient distribution isn’t uniform, one scoop may deliver a higher caffeine load, boosting stimulation and perceived energy, while another scoop could have less caffeine and more pump-supporting compounds. Over time, this can lead to inconsistent experiences, such as variable energy, differing pump intensity, and fluctuating levels of perceived exertion. And when caffeine is involved, this inconsistency is especially important, because both overstimulation and underdosing can affect performance.

How to Fix the Scoop
"The simplest step is this: shake or stir the tub before you scoop. Once opened, powders are not static systems. A quick stir with a clean utensil, or firmly tapping and rotating the container, can help redistribute ingredients and improve uniformity," Glenn explains.
It's also helpful to avoid storing pre-workout in humid environments, as moisture accelerates clumping and uneven distribution.
If you’re inconsistently scooping or if ingredient distribution varies, you may unintentionally fall below the effective thresholds of key ingredients like citrulline or beta-alanine. For example, uneven citrulline dosing can lead to reduced endurance in a workout, while inconsistent beta-alanine intake can prevent full muscle loading over time.
"This is where small daily inconsistencies compound," Glenn adds. "You may think the product 'doesn’t work,' when in reality, you’ve never consistently reached the dose required for it to work. From a science standpoint, effectiveness isn’t just about what’s on the label. It’s about what you reliably consume, every day."
