MSC World Europa brews beer from desalinated seawater in cruise industry first
MSC World Europa is producing beer on board using desalinated seawater, in what is being described as a world first for the cruise industry, according to newmoney.
The cruise ship’s “Oceanic” beer is brewed daily at sea through a fully operational microbrewery on deck eight, combining production, sustainability and onboard experience in one concept.
Bar manager Giulio Giannini told newmoney that the process begins with seawater desalination through osmosis.
“Basically, we desalinate seawater through osmosis. The resulting water is pure H2O, nothing more. From there, the entire brewing process begins,” he said.
Production takes place entirely on board, from milling and brewing to fermentation and maturation.
Giannini said the ship produces three varieties, Oceanic Pils, Oceanic Wheat and Oceanic Bitter, each with its own maturation time and method.
He added that the beers follow the broader trend towards lower alcohol content, ranging between 4 per cent and 4.5 per cent, with the bitter reaching about 4.4 per cent.
According to him, passengers often initially view the brewery as an attraction rather than a working production facility.
“At first, visitors think it’s just for show. But we produce beer on board every day,” Giannini said.
He added that the response changes once passengers taste the product, describing it as a distinctive part of the onboard experience.
“Drinking a beer produced on board is a unique experience,” he said.
The report said Oceanic is included in the ship’s entry-level Easy drinks package, while it is also available individually and through premium packages.
Beyond the brewery itself, it is mentioned that the initiative reflects a broader push towards self-sufficiency and innovation in modern cruising.
MSC World Europa runs on liquefied natural gas (LNG) and produces water for onboard use, while also operating waste recycling systems and other sustainability technologies aimed at reducing its environmental footprint.
