ACC-Bound High School Basketball Star Seriously Injured in Car Crash
One of the top girls high school basketball players in the state of Indiana was critically injured in a car accident last week and now has "a long recovery ahead of her."
Myah Epps, who played for Homestead High School and has signed with the University of Louisville, was involved in a "horrible" car accident on her way to school last Friday, March 13, according to a GoFundMe that has been started to assist her family.
A difficult road ahead
The GoFundMe states that Epps was first transported to a local hospital in Ft. Wayne before being airlifted to Indianapolis. She underwent surgery Saturday, per the Indianapolis Star.
"By the Grace of God she is still with us! However she sustained critical injuries and has a long recovery ahead of her," the GoFundMe says. "Many people have asked how they can help. This GofundMe has been created to help the family with the extensive healthcare expenses, hotel stays, food, and necessities.
"The Epps family is so thankful for the outpouring of love they have received through messages, calls, and prayers that have been sent to them. Keep the love & prayers coming, it is being felt!"
As of Tuesday morning, the GoFundMe has surpassed its $50,000 goal. NBA player Jalen Suggs donated $5,000 himself.
Clearing up 'inaccurate' rumors
On Saturday morning, Homestead head coach Rod Parker released a statement on behalf of Epps and her family shooting down "inaccurate" online chatter.
"On behalf of the Epps family, Coach Parker has been given permission to address inaccurate rumors currently circulating online," the statement says. "Myah, an HHS athlete, was involved in a car accident and is currently in stable condition. Other information being shared is inaccurate."
A 5-foot-10 combo guard, Epps averaged 14 points on 52% shooting, along with 4.1 assists and 2.3 steals per game this season, leading Homestead to another sectional championship.
Epps signed with Louisville back in the fall.
