UN Women urges support for women in Afghanistan amid growing restrictions
UN Women warned that the continued closure and restriction of public spaces for women and girls in Afghanistan threaten their fundamental rights and participation in society.
In a message shared Saturday on the social media platform X ahead of International Women’s Day, the agency said meaningful change is still possible if the global community stands firmly alongside Afghan women.
The organization stressed that Afghan women and girls must not be excluded from public life, education and employment, warning that such restrictions undermine equality, dignity and long-term development.
UN Women also reiterated concerns about policies that limit women’s access to workplaces and public institutions, calling on authorities to ensure that women can participate fully in society.
The agency previously described the ban on Afghan women working for the United Nations as an unprecedented measure that severely affects humanitarian operations and international engagement in the country.
Since returning to power in 2021, the Taliban administration has imposed sweeping restrictions on women, including limits on education, employment and freedom of movement.
UN Women urged the international community to continue advocating for the rights of Afghan women and girls, saying sustained global support is essential to reversing restrictions and restoring equal opportunities.
