Netflix Revives Beloved ’70s–’80s Western Drama With July Premiere — And It’s Already Renewed for Season 2
Netflix is going full steam ahead with its remake of Little House on the Prairie, the TV adaptation of the children's books of the same name, which ran from 1974 to 1983.
According to a new announcement from the streaming service, the planned remake, set to premiere this summer, now has a two-season order. "The Ingalls family are on their way," Netflix shared on social media. "Little House on the Prairie premieres July 9 and the series has been officially renewed for Season 2!"
"Starring Alice Halsey as Laura, Luke Bracey as Charles, Crosby Fitzgerald as Caroline, and Skywalker Hughes as Mary."
The new cast will be taking over the roles from Melissa Gilbert, the late Michael Landon, Karen Grassle, and Melissa Sue Anderson, respectively.
Little House on the Prairie chronicles the life of the Ingalls family, who live on a farm on Plum Creek, near Walnut Grove, Minnesota, in the 1870s–1890s. The series, based on the book series of the same name by Laura Ingalls Wilder, is inspired by the author's childhood as a settler and pioneer family in the Big Woods region of Wisconsin, in the village of Pepin.
"A hopeful family drama, epic survival tale, and origin story of the American West, this fresh adaptation offers a kaleidoscopic view of the struggles and triumphs of those who shaped the frontier," a press release for Netflix describes the upcoming reboot. "The early renewal is just one example of a larger viewing trend: the surging demand for feel-good, heartland-rooted comfort programming on Netflix. Little House on the Prairie will anchor Netflix’s slate of warm, emotionally grounded storytelling."
“We are delighted to renew this beautiful reimagining of Little House on the Prairie for a second season ahead of its Netflix debut," Jinny Howe, Netflix’s head of US and Canada scripted series, said in the statement. "The exceptional work by [showrunner] Rebecca Sonnenshine and the entire cast and crew on Season 1 has established a rich foundation of storytelling for years to come. With its hopeful spirit and emotional authenticity, we’re confident that Little House will deliver even more of what fans truly love.”
