Gorillaz ‘The Mountain, the Moon Cave, and the Sad God’ Movie Release Date, Screenings, and Streaming
Gorillaz have dropped the first look at their upcoming film, titled The Mountain, the Moon Cave, and the Sad God. The short film coincides with the release of the group's upcoming ninth studio album, The Mountain, featuring music by Damon Albarn and artwork by Jamie Hewlett. Its title is derived from three separate tracks on the album, “The Mountain,” “The Moon Cave,” and “The Sad God."
The film, inspired by the world music and Indian classical sound of the upcoming album, draws heavily from Indian and wider South Asian culture. The sneak preview of the nine-minute movie showcases the style and old-school celluloid animation reminiscent of the iconic 60s Disney adaptation of Rudyard Kipling's Indian adventure, The Jungle Book.
Gorillaz 'The Mountain, the Moon Cave, and the Sad God' Release Date
The Mountain, the Moon Cave, and the Sad God is set to premiere on February 27, the day the virtual band releases their album The Mountain.
“The Gorillaz went in search of something, but something was searching for them, at the top of… The Mountain," the trailer teased. "A journey that should have been a dream soon became a nightmare. They wanted to shoot a movie, but now, they are the movie. There is no way down… The Mountain. At the top of The Mountain, they are at the bottom of the food chain. Don’t go up… The Mountain. It’s a jungle out there.”
Gorillaz 'The Mountain, the Moon Cave, and the Sad God' Theater Showings
Gorillaz are partnering with Alamo Drafthouse Theaters across the U.S. for a special project to mark the new album. The movie theater chain is set to show the new short, in addition to a special, venue-only documentary film about the making of the project. "On Thursday, February 26th, Alamo Drafthouse will host an exclusive album release event: Gorillaz Presents The Mountain, The Moon Cave and The Sad God, plus a short documentary film – an Alamo-only 20-minute special video presentation – followed by a screening of Wim Wenders’ 2023 film PERFECT DAYS," the statement continued.
"Attendees of this one-night-only album release event will receive a limited-edition keepsake, available exclusively at this screening." In addition, super-fans can check out screenings of films specially chosen by the band's virtual members, 2-D, Murdoc Niccals, Noodle, and Russell Hobbs.
