Pasadena nets $18.47 million from sale of 13 former Caltrans properties, officials said
Pasadena officials this week confirmed that 13 of the 17 homes purchased by the city from Caltrans have been sold, netting $18.47 million to go toward affordable housing projects.
Pasadena Housing Director James Wong said the city has not yet programmed these funds for any specific project as of yet.
“We are evaluating development and/or disposition options for the remaining four (4) properties,” Wong said in an email.
The city listed the 13 properties back in the fall and sales closed between November and February, according to the city.
In 2024, Pasadena purchased 17 homes from Caltrans. The homes were among the 460 properties in Pasadena, South Pasadena and El Sereno that the agency seized from residents in the 1950s, 60s and 70s as part of a failed project to connect the northern stub of the 710 freeway with the 210 freeway.
The properties were vacant when Pasadena purchased them from Caltrans. State law requires that the city fund three affordable housing units for every Caltrans unit purchased using sales proceeds from the sales.
