Steven Spielberg Just Reached EGOT Status After Winning His First Grammy
If there’s one thing we always get a kick out of every awards season, it’s when someone crosses over into that prestigious territory of EGOT status.
For the uninitiated, the term “EGOT” refers to an entertainer who has won at least one Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony Award for their work.
On Sunday night, filmmaker Steven Spielberg became the latest famous face to join these ranks after winning his first Grammy during this year’s awards show.
And to think – we didn’t even know he could sing.
Jokes aside, Spielberg picked up his Grammy for his work as a producer on the documentary Music By John Williams, which triumphed in the Best Music Film category.
Over the years, Spielberg and Williams have collaborated numerous times, most notably on films like E.T., Close Encounters Of The Third Kind, Jurassic Park, Saving Private Ryan and the Indiana Jones franchise.
Celebrating his latest win, the director issued a statement to The Hollywood Reporter which said: “This acknowledgment is obviously deeply meaningful to me because it validates what I have known for over 50 years: John Williams’ influence on culture and music is immeasurable and his artistry and legacy is unrivaled.
“I am proud to be associated with Laurent’s beautiful film.”
Williams himself is only one award away from an EGOT, only missing a Tony.
Spielberg was already a three-time Oscar winner before Sunday thanks to his work on Schindler’s List and Saving Private Ryan, and has even more Emmys to his name thanks to projects as diverse as Band Of Brothers, the sci-fi miniseries Taken and the animated festive toon A Pinky & The Brain Christmas.
His Tony win came in 2022 as a producer on the musical A Strange Loop, as confirmed to HuffPost UK by Spielberg’s representatives on Sunday.
Spielberg is now the 22nd person to achieve competitive EGOT status, with an additional five included due to honorary wins.
Other famous faces to become EGOTs in the last few years have included musician Sir Elton John, actor Viola Davis and Jennifer Hudson, who also picked up a Tony as a co-producer on A Strange Loop.
