Is Louis Vuitton Getting into Surfing?
In 1858, French entrepreneur Louis Vuitton began his namesake empire by creating the iconic square, stackable travel trunks. And over 150 years later, the brand has endured, becoming one of the most iconic luxury fashion houses in the game.
Famed for its signature coffee-colored checkered design, the products have expanded beyond luggage and into handbags, menswear, womenswear, footwear, and more.
And now, per a sneak peek, the brand is maybe delving into surfwear and accessories.
A post from Metsa, a New York clothing, homeware, and accessories brand, a glimpse at Louis Vuitton embroidered surfboard fins and wetsuits are showcased.
The caption reads: “Thanks @pharrell and @louisvuitton. Heading to @atlanticparksurf with this sweet kit of rad luxury goods!”
Pharrell Williams has served as creative director of menswear for the brand since 2023. And recently, the music producer and fashion icon invested in a wave pool – the first Wavegarden Cove in the United States – Atlantic Surf Park, in his hometown of Virginia Beach, Virginia.
In fact, Pharrell was recently spotted surfing the pool for the first time since the park’s opening back in August; however, he wasn’t sporting Louis Vuitton surf gear. Instead, he rocked what appeared to be a wetsuit from Adidas, another long-term partner of the musician.
As for Metsa, other posts on their social media feed show imaginary surf collaborations with other mainstream, notably non-surfing brands – such as Timberland and Dewalt. So, this could all just be one big ruse, but perhaps not.
And speaking of mainstream brands entering the surf space, it brings to mind the current situation with Gabriel Medina leaving Rip Curl after 17 years of sponsorship. No news yet on what conglomerate will land their logo on the nose of Medina’s board, but from his megastar level of fame, could Louis Vuitton be the one to take the prime real estate?
Time will tell.
