It’s a storyline that Team Myla Plett is all too familiar with: being the young-upstart squad that is making waves with wins among Canada’s best women’s curling teams.
But Plett does not consider her team an underdog by any means. In fact, she’s at the 2025 Home Hardware Canadian Curling Pre-Trials at the Andrew H. McCain Arena in Wolfville, N.S., this week to do more than just tread water.
“One hundred per cent here to win,” she said. “There’s lots of great teams out there. We always come to play. We can match up against anybody if we play our best.”
Plett’s Edmonton/Sherwood Park, Alta., outfit (2-1), flanked by vice-skip Alyssa Nedohin, second Chloe Fediuk, lead Allie Iskiw, alternate Abby Whitbread, and coach David Nedohin, took a strong step towards their goal, serving Team Selena Sturmay (2-1; Edmonton) its first loss 10-5 on Tuesday afternoon.

It’s a win that Plett says sets the tone for what could be the Alberta women’s provincial final matchup.
“We’ve played them a couple times now,” said Plett of Team Sturmay. “They’re an amazing team, obviously. They’re a very strong team coming out of Alberta; one of the top teams. We knew right away that it was going to be a tough match, and we had to bring our game.”
Plett’s confidence is not unfounded either. Team Plett is the two-time Canadian U-20 women’s champions (2023 in Rouyn-Noranda, Que., and 2025 in Summerside, P.E.I) and currently the no. 16th-ranked women’s team in Canada.
Team Plett will also be wearing the Maple Leaf at the World Junior Curling Championships in Tårnby, Denmark, Feb. 24 – March 6, 2026, as Canada’s women’s representative.
“Most of our season has been to build towards winning worlds,” said Plett. “That’s our ultimate goal for the season.”
Where there’s confidence in Plett’s game, there’s also plenty of humility as well. Just a day ago in Draw 2 at the 2025 Home Hardware Pre-Trials, Team Plett squandered a three-point lead over Team Danielle Inglis (1-2; Ottawa) in the 10th end after Plett missed her final offering. Team Inglis would score four to secure the win.

“My team played great that game, actually,” said Plett of the lone loss. “I had an unfortunate miss in the last one, and Team Inglis are a great team. We knew they’d be tough.”
Plett knows that a short memory is often a curler’s best friend.
“No regrets on that one,” said Plett. “Wish we had a few rocks back, but it was a good game.”
In other matches Tuesday afternoon, Team Kayla MacMillan (3-0; Victoria) stayed perfect with a 6-4 win over Team Nancy Martin (1-2; Martensville, Sask.). Team Krista Scharf (1-2; Thunder Bay, Ont.) found the win column, defeating Team Inglis 8-7, while Team Sam Mooibroek (2-1; Whitby, Ont.) won the battle of Ontario over Team Scott Howard (2-1; Navan, Ont.) and Team Braden Calvert (2-1; Winnipeg) took the all-Winnipeg match-up 8-4 over Team Jordon McDonald (2-1; Winnipeg).
Recapping action from Tuesday morning, the host-province representative Team Owen Purcell (1-2; Halifax) delighted fans with a 7-6 extra-end victory over Team Jean-Michel Ménard (2-1; Montréal). Team Jayden King (1-2; London, Ont.) secured its first win over Team Mark Kean (0-3; Woodstock, Ont.) 7-6, while Team MacMillan downed Team Inglis 9-7 and Team Sturmay defeated Team Beth Peterson (0-2; Winnipeg) 8-3.
The 2025 Home Hardware Canadian Curling Pre-Trials continues Tuesday at 7 p.m., (all times AT).
