Spurs are short of homegrown and club-trained options in their squad, particularly following the departure of Alfie Whiteman and Fraser Forster.
That explains why the Lilywhites have been linked with so many English players over recent weeks, and it has now emerged that they have also considered signing one of their former defenders.
The player in question has thrived in the Championship over a couple of seasons and will be back in the Premier League for the upcoming campaign after helping his side win promotion.
Tottenham could sign Sunderland’s Dennis Cirkin on a discount
We are referring to Dennis Cirkin, who swapped Tottenham Hotspur for the Stadium of Light back in 2021 and has since developed into one of the best young talents in the EFL.
The 23-year-old, who can operate at left-back or centre-back, scored three goals and provided two assists for Sunderland last term as the Black Cats managed to win promotion via the playoffs.
Football.London’s Alasdair Gold has now revealed that Spurs have considered re-signing Cirkin in the past, but the journalist does not say if the player is on the wishlist of Thomas Frank’s men this summer.
Gold points out that while Tottenham’s buy-back clause for the defender expired last year, they still have a sell-on clause on the player.
As a result, Spurs would be able to sign their academy graduate on a discounted fee compared to other clubs, or if Cirkin does sign for someone else, the North Londoners would be owed a portion of the fee.
Which other club-trained players can Spurs sign?
While addressing the homegrown issue is fairly straightforward, addressing the shortage of club-trained options is complicated, as Spurs do not have many options to choose from.
One man they could sign is Japhet Tanganga, whose £2m release clause has made him a target for several Premier League clubs.
It has also emerged that Spurs are considering a move for Kyle Walker-Peters, who is available on a free transfer after his contract with Southampton ran out.
The other option would be Marcus Edwards, but that seems unlikely on the back of the winger’s struggles at Burnley since signing for the Clarets in January.
