Crowd goes wild as drag queens walk into Kennedy Center — and Trump booed
President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance attended a production of "Les Misérables" on Wednesday night where they were booed — but a group of drag queens who attended the show were cheered by the audience.
The Advocate reported, "Tara Hoot, drag king Ricky Rosé, Vagenesis, and Maria Con Carne attended the show in formal regalia."
As they entered, the audience cheered.
"We brightened the audience as much as we possibly could," said queen Tara Hoot.
Trump wasn't the only far-right political leader in attendance. Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) was also there, along with several other members of the administration, including Attorney General Pam Bondi, adviser Corey Lewandowski, and MAGA activist Laura Loomer.
“We were front and center, and it was delightful,” Hoot said. “So hopefully the cast got to see us. I heard they were very excited to have us there. We were very, very excited to be at the Kennedy Center.”
Hoot said she was nervous at first to attend but was welcomed openly by the Kennedy Center staff and crowd.
“We had so much fun seeing the Kennedy Center and seeing the cast of “Les Mis,’” she said. “Kudos to all of you bringing art to the world. Unfortunately, there were some other people there, but we, I think, we brightened the audience as much as we possibly could.”
Hoot posted another video Thursday morning talking about her campaign for "the people's choice for board chair of the Kennedy Center."
The Kennedy Center board was overthrown by Trump earlier this year and replaced with conservatives. The intention was to rid the shows of "wokeness," including drag performances. However, when the Kennedy Center announced its new season, it revealed one show was Mrs. Doubtfire, a story of a father who dresses in drag to secretly spend more time with his children amid his divorce.
