Those who enjoy the soundtrack for Free Guy should thank Ryan Reynolds, since he picked most of the songs for it. Arriving this weekend in theaters, Free Guy introduces audiences to a brand new hero: A non-playable character in a video game. Reynolds plays Guy, an affable bank teller who frequently gets held up and beaten by the players of the open world game Free City. When Guy meets a player known as Molotov Girl (Jodie Comer), he learns the truth about his surroundings and sets out to save the game from being shut down.
It seems as though Reynolds has brought his signature humor to all aspects of Free Guy, which is directed by Shawn Levy. Whether it be through the clever marketing campaign (which included a video of Reynolds as Deadpool reacting to the Free Guy trailer with the MCU's Korg), or squeezing in a second role for himself as an overly buff character named Dude, Reynolds has made the most of his role as one of the movie's producers. That even extends to its soundtrack, according to Levy.
While speaking to ComicBook.com about Free Guy, Levy discussed all the things that Reynolds brings to a project, which evidently includes an impressive musical taste. Reynolds came up with a lot of the surprising needle drops in the movie, and it taught Levy to trust his instincts when it comes to even the more outlandish suggestions. Levy said:
“Yeah. The truth is, as I said, if you're lucky enough to direct Ryan Reynolds in a starring role, you get all these secret weapons in addition. And the truth is that Ryan has very quirky, weird, inspired musical taste. So whether it was the Mariah Carey song or make your own kind of music, like a deep cut from the 50s or 60s, Ryan sometimes will go, "Is this a weird idea or should we try this song?" And what I've learned with Ryan is don't say no, at least give it a try because eight out of 10 times, it's going to be amazing, and it's going to make it into the movie.”
Much of Free Guy's soundtrack is for fans to discover when they see the movie, but one song has become the unofficial anthem of Guy's journey. Mariah Carey's "Fantasy" has played in several Free Guy trailers, and Levy previously recalled how Reynolds came up with it while working on the dialogue for the movie. It can be hard to find the perfect song for a specific moment, but it sounds like Reynolds has a knack for it. Free Guy appears to have some surprising songs on its soundtrack, and it'll be a lot of fun hearing each one pop up.
Free Guy arrives at a time when the state of moviegoing is more uncertain than ever. With concerns over the Delta variant rising and streaming options being made available, the box office recovery hasn't been as smooth as experts would like. Free Guy is one of the more unique cases, in that it won't be backed by any kind of streaming release. Levy said earlier this week that Disney was dedicated to giving Free Guy a traditional theatrical run, and everyone will be watching to see how it fares this weekend. Those who venture out to see it will be rewarded with a what sounds like a wildly fun soundtrack - just keep an open mind about it.
