Starfield's Universe Is Made For Every Type Of Player, Says Todd Howard
Director of Starfield Todd Howard says that Bethesda intends for players to "be who they want to be" when the game releases in 2022.
There’s still a lot of mystery surrounding Starfield and what kind of game Bethesda has created, but according to the game’s director, it’s meant to appeal to everyone in one form or another. Starfield was officially announced as the first new IP in years being developed by Bethesda Game Studios in 2018, and it made its first appearance since then at Xbox's E3 2021 showcase.
Since it first surfaced, the gaming community has been clamoring for any information it can get, whether it be Starfield’s release date or scraps of leaked images online. At long last, though a proper November 11, 2022 release date was officially announced at E3 2021, and the game will be exclusive to Xbox and PC. Bethesda held its first press conference as a subsidiary of Xbox on Sunday, and Starfield was arguably the biggest title to appear. Fans got a better glimpse at what the graphical style of the game is and many different small details explaining the game’s lore and world. However, Starfield’s gameplay has still yet to receive an official reveal.
This has unfortunately left gamers without a clear sense of who this game is for. If it’s any indication, Todd Howard describes Starfield as “Skyrim in space,” but the setting is still quite different and there’s plenty of reason to believe the gameplay will be, as well. In a post-conference interview with Telegraph, Todd Howard expressed a belief that the game could end up appealing to just about anyone, claiming that “our hope is that each player feels like they could say, here's who I want to be in this universe – and then we're giving them an outlet to express that.” With Starfield’s extraterrestrial setting, Howard’s remarks would indicate No Man’s Sky-like freedom of objective within more narrative-driven gameplay.
However, without official gameplay, it’s hard to say for sure. In the interview, Howard also makes mention of different factions, comparing them to the different factions in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. These factions are meant to serve as one of many ways of “[carving] your own path,” in Starfield. The game has been designed and structured in such a way that “you’re going to be who you want to be…” and the game will hopefully support the gameplay and goals of whoever that is.
All of the Starfield headlines surrounding E3 this year have rejuvenated those heavily anticipating the release of the game. However, Bethesda fans are beginning to see the effects of Xbox purchasing Bethesda’s parent company. As an Xbox console exclusive launching on Game Pass, Bethesda fans on PlayStation and Switch that the developer has courted over the years may need to explore other platforms to be able to play Starfield when it launches in 2022. For those who have the necessary platforms to experience the game, though, things are starting to heat up, and Starfield will only get more traction as the release date nears.
Starfield will be available for Xbox Series X/S and PC on November 11, 2022.
