The Batman Poster Concept Art Shows A Moody Take On Gotham
Concept posters for The Batman reveal the Caped Crusader looking over Gotham City. Robert Pattinson takes over the role from Ben Affleck after the latter's exit from the DCEU. Matt Reeves is directing the project which is currently in production after a few snafus that included the lead actor reportedly getting coronavirus. Now, however, work has resumed on The Batman with the blockbuster still set to roll out next year.
Warner Bros. and DC Films has assembled a star-studded ensemble cast for The Batman; joining Pattinson in the project are Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner Gordon, Zoë Kravitz as Catwoman, Paul Dano as the Riddler, Colin Farrell as the Penguin, and Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth. The blockbuster's first trailer was released at last month's DC FanDome where Reeves also revealed story details about the film. Previously, he has revealed a couple of official posters for the movie focusing on the titular character, but these earlier ones put a spotlight on Gotham instead.
Shared by New Mutants artist, Bill Sienkiewicz on Twitter is a couple of early pieces of concept art for The Batman. There are technically only two designs, but each one of them has their distinct colorways. Interestingly, they also have a "Batman Day" label, and fans who are up to date with everything DC will find them familiar as a different version of these one-sheets was shared by Reeves on the said occasion. Check them out below:
Instead of simply being a backdrop, it sounds like Reeves is making Gotham a major player in The Batman's narrative. Aside from the upcoming Gotham PD spinoff on HBO Max that will function as a prequel to the upcoming film, narrative details revealed by the filmmaker shares that the blockbuster will do a deep dive into the metropolis' history. Based on the trailer, coupled with pertinent details divulged to the public thus far, as Bruce Wayne digs deeper into the Riddler's plan, he'll learn how he and his family are ultimately connected to the deep-seated corruption in Gotham. Given this, the movie can offer fans a different perspective when it comes to the Caped Crusader and his ties to the city — making it more complicated for him to be its unofficial protector.
Depending on how things shake out on the set of The Batman moving forward, it's possible that fans will get more narrative information about the film sooner rather than later. Following Pattinson's supposed coronavirus diagnosis, it doesn't seem like any of his other cast mates or crew members were exposed to the disease, hence why they're able to restart work fairly quickly.
