European public prosecutor’s office to have positive impact on Armenia’s judiciary – former justice official
The ongoing judicial reforms in Armenia propose a plan for creating a European public prosecutor’s office in an effort to raise the effectiveness of the system, ensuring a higher degree of trust.
Speaking to Tert.am, a former deputy prosecutor general, Gevorg Kostanyan, said they expect the new type of institution to have a positive impact on law and order in the country, and the system in general.
A parliamentary decision made three months ago for raising the effectiveness of anti-corruption measures underlies the new institution plan.
Kostanyan, now a lawmaker of the ruling Republican Party of Armenia, says its mandate will apply to not only the EU member states but also countries which have signed Association Agreements with the Union. “The major task has to do with ensuring effectiveness in the distribution and spending of the EU sums. That agency has a considerably serious significance,” he noted.
