Federal Government probes N8.68bilion contract awarded by Jonathan in 2013

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has ordered the immediate investigation of a contract awarded under the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan for the distribution of books to schools across the country.
The contract which was awarded in August 2013 was worth N8.68 billion for the printing and distribution of textbooks as well as library materials for public primary schools’ classes one to six and junior secondary schools.
Minister of transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, who briefed State House correspondents after the meeting, said FEC also resolved to investigate the distribution of textbooks to schools in the country between 2009 and 2011.

Amaechi said it would be done before commencement of distribution of N6.9 billion textbooks for schools in the country.
According to him, FEC however approved production and distribution of core textbooks for early education classes 1-3 and for primary 4-6 in public schools nationwide.
His words: “The Federal Government felt there is a need to support in funding education, not just the instruction, but also the individuals who occupy the institution at the cost of N6.9 billion
“Council also gave approval for Jos Central Library and the construction of the Faculty of Animal Sciences and Engineering.”
Meanwhile, the Senate on Tuesday, December 19, challenged the minister of finance, Kemi Adeosun, on federal government’s insistence on passing the 2018 budget in January when less than 50% of the 2017 budget was only implemented.
The upper chamber also queried why the 2017 budget had no correlation to the 2018 budget, insisting the implementation, if passed by January, would be poor because of the size of Nigeria.
Chairman Senate committee on finance, Senator John Eno, made the position known during the budget defence of the ministry.
