About 40 companies in Russia were attacked through Microsoft Exchange Server vulnerabilities, Kaspersky Lab told Kommersant. The company records an increase in the number of attempts to exploit these vulnerabilities over the past week. Vulnerabilities allow cybercriminals to gain access to any mail accounts on Microsoft Exchange Server, as well as install malicious software on it, which can lead to theft of personal data or the use of ransomware.
Microsoft announced a series of attacks that exploit new vulnerabilities in Microsoft Exchange Server and released an emergency update on March 2. Probably after that, the group behind the attacks began mass infections of Exchange servers around the world, Kaspersky Lab experts believe. In their opinion, cybercriminals need this in order to gain access to organizations, which they may then use to achieve more specific goals.
